Today was a whirlwind, filled with both heartwarming moments and tough conversations.
Helping Hands in Unexpected Places
The day began with a visit to a local park where a man was camping. Another kind citizen was already dropping off supplies, highlighting the community spirit that exists even in unexpected corners. I also connected him to the Ferny Grove Tavern pantry, ensuring access to food.
Passion Project: Empowering Refugee Children
Taking a break from Northwest Community Group Inc., I volunteered with Pushing Barriers, an organization close to my heart. Here, I transport refugee children to their sports games, fostering inclusion and a sense of belonging.
Spreading Pizza and Kindness
The evening kicked off with a fantastic new initiative – a monthly pizza run! Thanks to Domino's Pizza Arana Hills' generous donation of 30 pizzas, we delivered hot meals to individuals in need. We started with the man in the park, then recent housing recipients, and folks at the Park Hotel and Roma House. Wickham Street's growing tent community received pizzas too, and the rest went to Musgrave Park. The gratitude was heartwarming, and with Domino's offering up to 40 pizzas next time, we can reach even more people!
Supporting Beyond Food: A Difficult Conversation
One of the toughest conversations I've had involved a woman I've supported for a long time. She's facing unimaginable hardship, having lost her partner and children. Feeling isolated and abandoned, she lashed out, questioning my continued support. While these accusations can be disheartening, I believe in the power of compassion. I reiterated my unwavering support and encouraged her to seek professional help. Later, she called back, apologizing and expressing her need for help. This cycle highlights the delicate balance between support and enabling. Building trust allows me to guide individuals towards positive change.
Preparing for the Future
Tonight, Nick joined me in putting up a tent in Kurilpa and restocking pantries. He's shadowing me as I prepare for a well-deserved 10-day break with Noi.
A Heartfelt Thank You
A huge thank you to Mary-Ann from FleetCrew for their incredible donation of 10 tents! This generosity will make a real difference in the lives of those experiencing homelessness.
This day encapsulates the essence of Northwest Community Group Inc. – a mix of practical support, community spirit, and unwavering compassion. It's a challenging but incredibly rewarding journey.
