Homelessness is a complex issue, and there are no easy solutions. This week, I met with Micah Projects, the Department of Housing, and Brisbane City Council to discuss the growing number of tents in Brisbane. While transparency is a core value, maintaining positive relationships with these organizations is crucial for progress.
There were both frustrations and promising developments. Here's a breakdown:
Disagreements and Shared Goals:
Micah Projects and I have differing views on how best to support those living in tents.
The Department of Housing reiterated claims of offered accommodation being refused, a statement I often challenge due to its inconsistency with what I hear on the ground.
Positive Steps Forward:
Micah Projects has generously offered to house individuals currently in tents.
We will develop a shared contact log to track housing needs and placements.
Micah Projects will join me more frequently during outreach efforts.
Putting Words into Action:
We tested Micah's offer with success, highlighting the need for the Department of Housing to fulfill their claimed availability.
A Personal Story of System Challenges:
A couple facing safety concerns struggled to secure accommodation.
Micah Projects stepped in to provide temporary housing after an initial delay.
This experience underscores the human cost of a system that may not be adequately addressing needs.
Community Support is Vital:
Thanks to Malaysia Nyonya House . Little Nyonya Kitchen for food donations.
The generosity of anonymous donors who provided much-needed supplies is deeply appreciated.
Volunteers like Rusty, Farhaanah, Dani, and Chris are instrumental in making our outreach possible.

Looking Forward:
Our goal is to minimize tent use and transition those seeking accommodation at Musgrave Park into permanent housing.
Collaboration is key, and we urge the Department of Housing to deliver on their promises.
This is an ongoing effort, and we'll continue to share updates and advocate for those in need. Thank you for your support in this crucial endeavor.
P.S. A lighthearted moment: a resident's message with a funny toilet mishap reminded us of the importance of community and shared experiences.
